IN my despatch No. 230 of the 3rd November, 1902, Sir E. Satow was requested to urge the Wai-wu Pu to insist on the Hoppo of Canton carrying out the instructions of the Chinese Government in regard to the administration by the Imperial Maritime Customs of the native customs stations within 50 li of that port.
I shall be glad to learn whether the representations made by Sir E. Satow or yourself on the subject have had the effect desired by His Majesty's Government.
Should they have proved unavailing, I request that you will make renewed representations to the Chinese Government in regard to the matter, pointing out that more than sufficient time has elapsed to allow of all necessary arrangements being made.
